Can We Really Have and Do All Things?
I’ll admit, one of my fears in life is missing out on what God has already given me. I know we shouldn’t be driven or led by our “fears,” it’s not a healthy way to live. Nevertheless, it brings about a certain focus that allows me to do and connect with “all things” God has given me.
There seems to be two schools of thought on the subject matter of “all things.”
- We can only obtain what we have the capacity to manage.
In other words, every person has been given a measure of faith (Romans 12:3). With this measure of faith we’re able to obtain a measure of favor, a measure of resources, a measure of influence, etc. And this is determined by the capacity we’ve been given to fulfill on earth according to God’s sovereignty.
- There are no limits. It’s based on our ability to believe.
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. – Matthew 19:26
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. – Philippians 4:13
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us… – Ephesians 3:20
Where do I stand? I’ll have to so say it’s both. In the last days of John the Baptist’s ministry, after identifying and baptizing Jesus, John came to a place of transition. As Jesus began to preach, John’s followers began to follow Jesus. John’s disciples were concerned about this and complained to John. Here’s what John said…
A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. – John 3:27
In other words, he was saying, “my ministry has a cap.” He could only do, obtain, achieve, attain and complete what Heaven assigned to him. His “cap” identified his capacity, and that capacity took years in the desert to form. His greatest achievement wasn’t knowing who he was, rather knowing who he WAS NOT. His joy of accomplishment was knowing that he was able to do “all things” he was assigned to do within the capacity that was given to him. And the secret to his success was making sure that Jesus increased and that he decreased.
I believe that we must grow in our capacity to fulfill the assignment of our lives. I also believe that the “sky is the limit” within that capacity. All things are possible within the arena of His calling in our lives. And the ONLY way to receive the joy of completion is by learning to always allow Christ to INCREASE and us to decrease.
